First Person narratives about a disaster

2/23/2018

Today I asked you to create an outline for your disaster story. There are no guidelines for structure, but there are certain elements that you will need. For example:

  • Obviously you should have the inspirational disaster (oxymoronic!) on your outline, and a working title that should inspire you.
  • You'll need to sketch out your main character, the persona you have created as a stand in for you. You don't have to overtly state the details of the character in the story, but the back story you create should be evident in the character you write.
  • Plot points. Where will your story go? Generally, when writing a short story, writers create a Story Arc, which maps out the direction your story will head.
  • The Story Arc generally consists of an Introduction (which should include some sort of hook), some Rising Action (which should introduce complication), a Climax (which should bring the complication to its confrontation), a Resolution (which figures out the implications of the climax), and Dénouement (which wraps the story up). These are not set in stone, but they provide a template for your story.
  • You might also prepare your hook, using one of the Narrative Leads contained on the attached sheet. Note the technique used in each lead.

Nethergrave Assignment

1/19/2018

Today I checked homework (fu'realz), and then we went over the questions.
What happened next was the introduction to the Nethergrave assignment. This assignment is worth 50 marks, and it will be due by Tuesday, January 30th.

My expectations are that you will complete the assignment in your One Note Notebook. I will soon (as soon as the program will let me) have placed Nethergrave Completion sheets in the Work Sheets folder in your note book. You should be able to type your story completion directly on that page, and then save it. Once it is complete, I will assess it, and post your mark directly there.

Some things to remember:
  • Nethergrave is a third person, limited omniscience story. Please don't write in the first person, nor should anybody's thoughts be explored other than Jeremy's.
  • Past tense only.
  • The ending should make sense with the rest of the story- don't go too far off on tangents.

Today, after a spot of silent reading, we read through a poem called "A Praise for Listener" (page 4-6, Language 8). After a brief discussion of the poem, you were assigned questions 1-7 on page 7. These are to be completed for discussion on Monday.

If you haven't submitted your Personal Culture Project yet, please get it into me as soon as possible, as I will begin marking them tomorrow.

Enjoy your long weekend.

Over the next while, at least while I'm still here, you will be expected to bring a book to read each class. It should be a novel, or a novel-length non-fiction book. My goal is to get you reading something for every class.

You will also be receiving your Language 8 text books today. Yay.

Today is Friday, September 22nd, and your Personal Culture Projects are due. You have a full period in the lab today to finish the assignment. If you cannot get it done, you will have to finish it at home.

Before you submit the assignment, go over it more than once, and try to get someone else to read it.

Once done, attach your assignment to an e-mail and send it to mcguiremarks@gmail.com

Here's how we do...

Today we looked at word choices in context, and Thursday you get your library orientation. It will take the period. Please go directly to the library.

Today we also began working on our Personal Culture Project. We went over criteria, I showed you a classy example, and you began writing your ideas down.

So you know- on Monday next we will have another grammar presentation, then you will have time to work on your rough drafts for the project. I will come around to check out progress. Wednesday and Friday of next week we will be in the computer lab (A303) to do all of the work on the project. You have two full periods to get it done.

It is due on Friday, September 22nd.
